History
The Irish Hunter is the produce of the Irish Draft horse and English Thoroughbred. It is known worldwide for its brilliance over fences. Although a halfbred, the Irish Hunter is usually included in breed books as this horse exhibits a remarkable degree of uniformity in type.
While formerly the main market for Irish horses was in England, the Irish horse is now demanded internationally.

Description

  • Head:
    well proportioned with a straight or slightly convex profile; large and expressive eyes; long and nicely shaped ears, pointing forward
  • Conformation:
    -long and muscular neck with a slight arch
    -prominent and long withers-full and deep chest
    -short back
    -broad, muscular, and slightly sloping croup
    -solidly built and well muscled legs with broad, clean joints and well defined tendons
  • Average height:
    16 to 17.1 h.h.
  • Colour:
    found in all colours except piebald or skewbald
  • Temperament:
    intelligent, courageous. It is agile as a cat over rough terrain and known for its endurance at the gallop
  • Today:
    bred for the hunt and well suited to all kinds of terrain, the Irish Hunter is surefooted and a favorite for show jumping and eventing.
