Sárvár

Origin
Hungary

History
The Sárvár was originally a Hungarian breed, developed at Sárvár, a blending of Thoroughbred, North Star and Furioso blood. This is a halfbred type. The stud was founded by emperors of the Austria Habsburg dynasty. During the Second World War, the owner of Sárvár stud, Prince Ludwig,  had to flee with his horses. He ended his flight in southern Bavaria near Lake Starnberg, where his family owned a castle. Today the stud is owned by one of his sons, His Royal Highness Prince Ludwig of Bavaria who still breeds a small population of Sárvár horses. The greater part of this breed were returned to Hungary in the seventies and were placed at the ancient stud farm Káld. At the Ludwig stud no foreign stallions had been used apart from Thoroughbred.
In Germany there are today about ten broodmares and four stallions. One Thoroughbred stallion is also kept at the stud. The horses are kept outside to keep them hardy.
