It is an infection or inflammation of the bronchial tubes in the lung.
Cause
This is rarely a primary condition but occurs secondary to a viral infection or together with other pulmonary disease. Various bacterial species -streptococci, staphlococci, pseudomonas and E.coli- can be found in samples taken from the trachea and certainly contribute to the pathogenicity of the disease.
Symptoms
Breathlessness, together with a hollow, chronic cough. A reduction in exertional capacity develops. An increase in lung sounds is present.
Treatment
- a long course of antibiotic such as a penicillin/streptomycin mixture
- a clean air regime
- mucolytic and expectorant drugs are helpful
