Conjunctivitis

It means an infection of the conjunctiva which is the lining of the eye.

Cause
A variety of organisms may be involved, either as a primary or secondary infection to physical damage to the conjunctiva. Attacks often happen when horses are kept in a dry, hot and dusty environment.

Symptoms
There are first a reddening of the eye and the appearance of a clear discharge becoming mucopurulent. The eyelids are then swollen and remain closed, especially in strong light.

Treatment
The affected eye should be treated with an eye ointment containing an appropriate antibiotic which will be applied twice or three times a day.
